Note: Somehow I ended up anti-shipping Donna/Roy and shipping Lilith/Roy super hard over the course of writing this. Oops. The sections aren't quite chronological, with the "bad idea" at the start because I didn't want to end this on a down note.

Roy has no illusions about love conquering all. He already knows very well that love gets chewed up and spit out by life like everything else. But he doesn't let that stop him from looking. Even if love doesn't last, he's going to enjoy it while he can, for however long he has it... and with whoever will let him love them.

Most people think he isn't serious. They telegraph pretty clearly that they consider the kissing, the dating, the sex all in fun -- a welcome bit of intimacy and enjoyment, but nothing serious. Roy doesn't see the need to correct them, doesn't feel like putting his heart out there on the line when they make it clear that they won't be. But he cherishes all of them.

He didn't have much chance to get to know Jason when he was alive.

No, that's a lie. He had his chances, but he rarely ever took them. He'd been angry with Bruce, too angry to see past his own hurt and rejection to the young boy in need of a guiding hand. In need of a big brother.

Oh, he didn't stay away the entire time that Jason was acting as Robin. After Alfred mentioned his growing concerns over how violently angry Jason could get with certain criminals, Dick managed to swallow his pride long enough to go back to the manor and at least attempt to socialize with his replacement.

Yes, the title is a reference to Robert Frost's "Mending Wall" poem. I don't know if it fits, exactly, but I like the poem and kept it in mind when thinking about the prompt.

I call this a semi-prequel to the Curse!verse because it nails down the timeline to a point where I think I messed up the Batfamily lineup. By the time One Year Later happened and this scene was acted out in canon, I think Cass was no longer Batgirl? Well, maybe this happens, and Cass comes back, and THEN the 'Curse of Aine' happens. I dunno.

Also, the Curse!verse is going to be Dick/Jason and museofspeed specifically asked for genfic. So this doesn't have to be followed by 'Curse of Aine'. But assume that a similar scene happened in the Curse!verse to get Nightwing and Red Hood in Gotham at the start.
