Familiar (originally posted here at [livejournal.com profile] comment_fic)

"You remain unavenged."

Her lips pressed to his was a familiar sensation -- clearly, this was not their first kiss. Jason's mind reeled -- memories crashed together, sensations both then and now warred for primacy -- and he wanted to scream. He wanted to grab her and demand why her kiss felt familiar; he wanted to fight her, fight the urge to respond, to give in... because this was Talia al-Ghul, for fuck's sake, he should push her away and --

The duffel bag slammed into his chest; at the same time, her arm unwound itself from around his shoulders. Unbalanced, he teetered precariously for a moment -- locking gazes with her remorseless amber-brown eyes -- then plunged off the cliff.

Unlike the Lazarus Pit, the seawater was icy cold, a chill that leeched deep into his bones, and for a moment, Jason was struck by the utter rightness of that cold -- for a moment, he considered simply allowing himself to sink deeper, to not fight for the surface.

Jason lifts his hands from their folded pose on his chest, trying to see them in the inky darkness. He reaches out... His hands meet the resistance of thick padding covered in satin. The knowledge crashes down on him with crushing weight, he thrashes in panic...

His eyes flew open once again. He fought the urge to scream, instead kicking powerfully until he reached the surface. Jason gasped for air. The duffel bag bobbed on the waves nearby. He stuck his arm through the loop of the strap and started to swim.

First order of business was, as always, to survive. Everything else -- including the memories of Talia, flushed and smiling, leaning down to capture his mouth with hers, and the memories that was just a prelude to -- could be sorted out later.

Jason swam for the shore and hoped that the answers he found would be the kind he could live with.
