Summary: For Jen, who requested Petunia/Vernon fluffy romance as her pairing of choice after the Squick Challenge. Hope this fits the bill!
“I got a letter from Duddykins today,” Petunia told Vernon over dinner, looking at him over the candles she had lit earlier. The table was set with their fine china, and she had made sure to make his favorite meal for supper.
“How is he? Has he found a girlfriend yet? Boy like him should have one by now,” Vernon asked before looking suspiciously at the flickering candle in front of him. He leaned over and blew it out, nodding when it did nothing but sputter and die.
“He’s fine, though he didn’t mention any young ladies, unfortunately. But not everyone can have your good luck at finding someone like me at such a young age, now can they Vernon? Oh, and he wishes us a happy anniversary. Wasn’t it sweet of him to remember?” Petunia asked, looking at her husband innocently.
“Yes, yes, very lovely,” Vernon answered, looking up at her and then at the candle quickly. He patted his pockets quickly. “Have you any matches, Petunia? I … I just wanted to make sure there wasn’t anything funny about that candle is all. You never can tell these days.”
She stood and reached into her pocket, handing him the packet of matches that were leftover from their wedding. She saw Vernon glance at them and mutter to himself, and she hid a smile. He hadn’t remembered even once since their wedding. But he always did make up for it afterward. Last year he’d taken her on a cruise through the Mediterranean. It had been lovely, even if the help aboard the ship hadn’t been all she’d expected. But the pictures she’d shown her friends of herself and Vernon lying on white sandy beaches had more than made up for it. They’d been quite jealous, she remembered with a smile. Why Louise had tried to convince her husband to take her away for their anniversary, but he’d only agreed for a weekend away in Bath. Yes, her cruise had certainly been the envy of the neighborhood ladies.
She watched Vernon light the candle quickly and smile at her. “Delicious roast, dear,” he complimented her as he returned to his seat.
“Why thank you. I did make it special for you as I know it’s your favorite,” she said, blushing demurely. Or what she hoped was demurely. It was so hard to tell these days. Demure certainly didn’t mean what it used to, what with those tarts running around on the telly wearing school girls’ uniforms and such. Absolutely disgraceful, it was!
“I’ve been meaning to tell you, my dear,” Vernon began nervously as he cleared his throat. “These past … erm … twenty? Yes, twenty years with you have been marvelous, simply marvelous.”
“Why, Vernon, I was just about to say the same to you,” Petunia replied, smiling up at him.
“And for our anniversary this year, well, I’d like to … spend it … “
“Yes?” she asked, leaning forward slightly.
“Alone,” he said.
“Alone?” she repeated, her jaw dropping. No trip? No jewels? How was she supposed to one-up the neighbors if he wanted to spend it alone? Not that was the only reason she’d brought up their anniversary; but it’s what was expected of him—of them! How could she hold her own this year against the trinkets and knick knacks the girls received when he wanted to … be alone?
“Alone with you,” he amended quickly. “Yes, just the two of us.”
“But Vernon, it’s always the two of us, except in the summers and on holidays,” she said, unable to keep the disappointment out of her voice.
Her husband sighed, and she looked up at him in worry. Vernon never sighed like that.
“I … I didn’t want to tell you, my dear, but the factory hasn’t been doing as well recently. Nothing to worry about of course; people always need drills, but I was rather hoping we could holiday as a family this summer, after Dudley finishes school.”
Petunia found herself nodding, more out of habit than understanding. “What about … that boy?”
Vernon shrugged. “The what’s-it that … that wizard put on him will wear off in July anyhow. Besides, I’m fairly certain he’ll find himself more welcome elsewhere. He knows my feelings on the matter; I told him on the way to the station in August.”
“Oh,” she said, picking at her dinner with a fork and staring at her plate. “Yes, that sounds lovely. A family holiday.”
“Don’t be upset, Petunia. Business will pick up again after all,” he said, his voice confident. He stood up abruptly and walked around the table to her. “Besides, you can always tell your friends that I can’t bear the thought of us leaving the bedroom this year. I have been working overtime, and I miss my wife.”
Petunia felt a smile cross her face as she considered the effect it would have. “That would make them jealous. Their husbands aren’t half as romantic as you are, dear,” she relented, looking up at him. She squeaked when he pulled her up against him.
“And if you go look in my closet, there’s a little package from a certain ladies’ store,” he trailed off, wagging his eyebrows enticingly.
“You remembered?” she asked unable to keep her surprise from her face.
He grinned. “I did. How could I forget last year after all? One year ago we were on that beach, just the two of us,” he said, holding her closer.
She giggled, feeling like a girl of twenty again. “Oh my, that was … invigorating with the water splashing us while we …” She trailed off, a blush on her cheeks.
“Yes, wasn’t it? Now, why don’t you go get that package?” Vernon suggested, smiling in anticipation.
Petunia shook her head. “Why don’t we save that for later, dear? After all, you’ve a week until our anniversary,” she reminded him.
“And you made me think I was late! You minx,” he chided her with a proud smile. He kissed her passionately as they made their way to the stairs.
Oh yes, Petunia thought with satisfaction. This would definitely one-up the girls.
