Published and originally worked on back in 2003 (May 6th, 2003 - May 20th, 2003), this story has been the figurative thorn-in-my-side ever since Order of the Phoenix came out. Rendered immediately non-canon, which depressed me mightily, it was dropped and ignored in favor of new fandom. Rereading it recently, I found it nothing but "wince-worthy" and set about rewriting it...then I realized that I had to do a full rewrite. Here are the first two chapters...content-wise, they're really the old first chapter, with a better bridge to the action, and a much improved backstory.
