After the Hard Knocks

"Walking in to this house feels like walking onto the set of ‘Annie’," Rose groused, as the private elevator to the penthouse opened up, and a cacophony of child-generated noise greeted them. Eddie nudged her in the side and pointed out,

"But Rose, you loved ‘Annie’. You cried when you met Quvenzhané Wallis.”

"I did not!" Rose hissed.

"It’s the hard knock life for us," a familiar voice sang out from the kitchen, "It’s the hard knock life for us…"

Eddie giggled as Rose groaned. Their conversation had obviously been overheard.

A higher, younger voice sang back, “‘Stead a’ treated—”

And then both together: “We get tricked!”

“‘Stead a’ kisses—

And several other, even younger, voices joined in “We get kicked!”

"All right, all right, enough already!" Rose yelled back. "Those vocal lessons aren’t sticking as well as you think, kids!"

"That just means they should practice more, Rose,” Eddie pointed out. Jason came waltzing out of the kitchen, a small child on each arm, followed by a tall preteen girl… just in time to hear that comment.

Rose sighed as they all started singing again — even Eddie, who Rose could swear was deliberately just a little off-key. But she couldn’t help smiling. When she’d gotten involved with Eddie and Jason, she hadn’t thought that there would be kids in their future — or that Jason would insist on adopting (though in retrospect it was obvious).

She looked at them all, her family. Smiling Eddie, smirking Jason; gangly but still-skinny Noah clinging to Jason’s shoulders, small and serious-faced Boupha wriggling to be passed to Eddie, and her dear Lily, who beamed at her when Rose let out a whistle at just the right moment.

"You’re gonna clean this dump till it shines like the top of the Chrysler Building!" Rose declared, imitating Ms. Hannigan from the play.

'If you can't beat 'em… join 'em. The dorks.'
