Building Family
Connor Hawke watched as the little girl was was led into the monastery. Sin looked back over her shoulder at him, just once. Connor managed to muster up a reassuring smile. She would be safe from the League of Assassins within this hidden and highly secretive Tibetan holy place.
He lifted his shoulders, burrowing just a little into the parka he wore as a particularly sharp gust of cold wind hit the isolated mountaintop. The gates closed, and he turned to go.
In his pocket, something buzzed. Connor gave a little sigh and dug out the communicator, slipping one hand out of its glove just long enough to hit the answer button.
"Hawke," a digitized voice said, "has she made it into the monastery?"
"Yes, Oracle," Connor answered.
"Good," Oracle said. There was a coldness more biting than the wind under the monotone mask of the voice modulator. "A team of Birds is a few days behind you. That should be long enough to lull your stupid father into complacency."
Connor didn’t protest. Really, how could he? Oliver Queen was capable of faking a child’s death and lying to her mother about it. He was capable of lying to Dinah. “If you hadn’t had this plan,” he admitted, “I don’t know if I could have gone along with his… scheme.”
"You were right to come to me, Hawke. Thank you."
"I have to go," Connor said. He wasn’t comfortable with accepting thanks for having any part in this.
"All right. Oracle out."

Babs released the connection with Connor Hawke and turned to the other woman standing in her control room. Dinah Lance watched the monitors, but Babs would be surprised if she was retaining any of the information.
"She’ll be back home with us in less than a week," Babs said quietly. "It’s going to be all right, Dinah."
After a long silence, Dinah finally responded, “No, Babs… not all of it.” Her gaze moved from the monitors to Barbara’s illuminated face. “I don’t think Ollie and I are ever going to be ‘all right’ again. He took my daughter from me. He let me believe she was dead.”
"And he was wrong," Babs agreed. "He may have thought he was doing the right thing, but he went about it the wrong way. Barda, Scott, and Helena will bring her back."
Dinah nodded. She sounded very tired when she said, “I don’t want to go back to Star City, Babs.”
"Then don’t. Stay…" Babs’s voice caught in her throat for the smallest of moments, and then she said, clear and steady, "Stay with me, Dinah. Don’t go."
"Babs…"
Babs wheeled around and closed the gap between her and Dinah. She took the other woman’s hands and looked up into her face, the face she loved above all others, “Just stay with me. Always. I’ll keep you and Sin safe. Together. I promise.”
"Oh…" Dinah realized what Babs was asking for. She felt tears well up in her eyes as she sank to her knees beside Babs’s chair. "Oh, Babs."
"Please..?"
Dinah wrapped her arms around Babs’s waist. “Yes. I’ll stay with you. Yes. We’ll be a family.”
Babs laughed, but she was crying a little too, with relief. “Thank you.”
They held each other in silence for a while. Then Dinah looked up, an impish little smile on her lips.
"How do you think Cass will take having a little sister?"
"I think…" Babs considered the question, and smiled slow and soft. "I think she’ll love her."
