Taste Test
"Omigod, they have that here!" was Tana's only warning before Superboy's aura curled protectively around her and he flew them up in the air over a busy street toward... whatever he'd seen.
"Kid!"
"Tana, you totally have to try this! You'll love it, I promise!"
"..." Tana looked at the shop he'd landed them in front of. "Ice cream? You scared me half to death over ice cream?"
Superboy looked as if she'd just told him she was gonna throw out all her belly shirts and wear nineteenth century swimsuits from now on. "This is no mere ice cream, Tana! This is gelato!"
She crossed her arms over her chest and asked defensively, "What's the difference?"
"What's the difference!" He repeated, with an edge of despair. "Oh, Tana. We must educate you."
As he dragged her into the shop, shouting an order for a cup of caramel gelato, Tana could only shake her head at the sheer backwardness of the situation. Even moreso when it turned out that the Kid actually had money left over from his monthly stipend (as controlled by Dubbilex, who received money from Cadmus for living expenses) to pay for the treat. Usually, Superboy blew through that allowance halfway through the first week of the month.
She claimed them a table as Superboy charmed the staff. Most people responded to his enthusiasm with good cheer in kind, and the young man scooping out the ice cream -- oh, pardon, gelato -- made a comment about Superboy endorsing their product.
"Sure, you'll want to talk to my agent," Superboy replied. He pulled one of Rex's business cards out of the small pouch on the inside of his thigh belt and placed it atop the Plexiglas shield between himself and the employee. "Right now I'm spendin' time with my girlfriend, so I can't talk business."
Tana smiled at the casual reference to her as his girlfriend -- ignoring the nakedly jealous glance from the girl cashier -- and gave Superboy a little wave when he glanced over his shoulder at her. He beamed back, and accepted the cups and spoons, carrying them over to the cashier. She rang him up quickly, blushing a bit. (Tana almost felt like telling her not to worry, the Kid could be pretty oblivious to embarrassment.)
"Here!" Superboy held out one of the cups. "I got you the caramel, but you can try a little of my mint chip, too."
Tana accepted it, nudging the chair across from her away from the table with her foot. "Sit, and I will, Kid."
He plopped into the chair. "You'll like it. I'm sure you will -- you have good taste."
She had to roll her eyes a little at that, knowing he was probably referring to the fact that she was dating him, as the indicator of her good taste. Then she stuck the spoonful of caramel gelato in her mouth.
Superboy grinned at the look on her face. He took on a slight pidgin accent, "You like? Really broke da mout', yeah?"
Tana hummed for a moment, then removed the spoon. "Omigod... how could people keep this from me?"
He laughed. "See? You can totally trust Superboy, babe."
