Inspired by [livejournal.com profile] saphire_dance's idea of writing a fanfic for 'prompts' from her Word-a-Day calendar, I went to Dictionary.Com for their Word of the Day. I kind of stole her idea and wrote about very-early-post-COIE Jason Todd. ^^;;;

Keep Calm and Carry On

Perhaps he should have spoken up. Voiced his disapproval more clearly when Master Bruce "fired" Master Dick and drove him away. Because Alfred had known, even without the new proof staring at him with wary blue eyes, that Master Bruce had not truly meant what he'd said.

'No place for a child in what you do, Bruce?' Alfred thought, watching with distaste as the new boy finished his sandwich and proceed to pick his teeth with his nails, and then his nails with his teeth. At least he used the napkin to wipe off his fingers afterward. Perhaps he would be salvageable.

But Alfred was not in the habit of lying to himself. Even as he thought these things, he recognized them for the pretense that they were -- affronted homemaker's pride masking his honest fear that harm would come to the boy. Bruce had turned away a young man with training and years of experience, substituting Master Dick for a teenager -- barely more than a child -- with no training and no special abilities.

Alfred cleared the table, silently cursing Faye Gunn for her wickedness, for convincing Bruce that entrusting Jason Todd to anyone other than himself would be putting the boy in danger. There was danger everywhere for this boy -- Alfred had already heard Bruce refer to him as "Robin", and had imagined, horrified, the harm that could come to an untrained teenage boy facing off with Gotham criminals.

He let none of his turmoil show on the surface. When he returned from the kitchen, he smiled gently at Jason. It was not the boy's fault that Master Bruce's decisions were flawed.

"Would you like to pick out a room to stay in?" Alfred asked, keeping his voice pleasant.

Jason's gaze did not lose any of its suspicion, but he offered up a small, peace-offering smile of his own. "I'm good wherever you wanna stash me..."

"One does not 'stash' young men in one's home, no matter what impression Master Bruce may have given you, Master Jason," Alfred said loftily.

Jason blinked. After a moment, his smile spread, lighting up his eyes as he realized that Alfred was joking around with him. "We-ell, yanno," he drawled, hamming up his Gothamite street accent outrageously, "I ain't never been in no house this big, 'r this fancy, Jeeves. Them richies do things different, don't they?"

"The name, young sir, is Alfred." He walked quickly for the main staircase, shooting back over his shoulder, "And just for that, you are going to read the works of P.G. Wodehouse."

"..." Jason scampered to keep up with Alfred. He was quick for an old guy! "Who? What? Read?"
