JANUARY: [livejournal.com profile] ew_younerd is a great person.

FEBRUARY: Personally, I take issue with this post in the [livejournal.com profile] lj_ads comm.

MARCH: I am so glad we had a snow day with school starting long after all my classes were over.

APRIL: The night before the Comicon, I was researching the bus routes (I had both Sound Transit and Mapquest open), when I realized that the ticket I had purchased at Ticketmaster was for Sunday instead of Saturday.

MAY: Okay, little bit of backstory.

JUNE: How far will I go to see Adam on my day off?

JULY: Okay, I JUST finished my entry for the No School Like the Old School Ficathon.

AUGUST: In the grand tradition of [livejournal.com profile] captain_slinky sharing the lulz from his inbox, I give you...my Yahoo account Bulk folder!

SEPTEMBER: Yoinked from [livejournal.com profile] gc_storyteller

OCTOBER: For the past three days, I haven't eaten any beef, pork, or chicken.

NOVEMBER: Shh!

DECEMBER: I just saw "Planet Terror" and have a hankering for more zombies!

schizoauthoress: (Mr. Wilson Childfree)
Since declaring myself childfree, I've noticed more than ever how pervasive the whole idea of having children is in our society. I've noticed how many people perpetuate the image of 'child as angelic being' who is a source of joy for all. It needles at me. I can't escape it, not even in the books I read!

Some of my recent reading material that contained breeder-centric material that got under my skin:

  • Horizons, Mary Rosenblum (a whole minor plot point and character made me grind my teeth in this one)

  • Orphans of Chaos, John C. Wright (a small comment, though that one was a surprise -- I read the second book in the series, Fugitives of Chaos, first)

  • The entire "Ghostwalkers" series, Christine Feehan (to be fair, it is paranormal romance, and steeped in that whole breeder tradition...)

Now, before you start thinking that I am horribly anti-child, and I will hate any book that mentions children, I have this to say: I enjoy any book that is well-written and interesting, even if it contains ideas that I object to. A lot of Horizons had to do with protecting family bloodlines, the importance of heirs, and our genetic future as the human race. I had absolutely NO problem with that. What I had a problem with was this:

Book Quote and Tiny Spoilers Beneath Cut )

The function of protagonist is to allow the reader a chance to immerse themselves in a new world, is it not? The protagonist is the point of reference to which we are connected, the driving force behind the action. And I resented very much that the protagonist of Horizons was associating with this little brat, however short that association was (bottom of 139 to the top third 149, roughly nine pages). Thank God it was only a very tiny plot point that segued into a more important one, otherwise I would dismiss the entire section as useless.

In comparison, what I found in Orphans of Chaos was negligible so far, only a small comment that "not having children would be a kind of death" (paraphrase). Still, yuck. I'd rather die that kind of death than risk death in childbirth, thank you.
